The Truth About Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water

What’s in Your Drinking Water?

Recent research has uncovered previously unknown chemical byproducts in tap water treated with traditional disinfectants like chlorine and chloramine. Scientists identified a new compound, chloronitramide anion, in concentrations up to 100 micrograms per liter in U.S. drinking water (NY Post, 2024).

While chlorine is widely used to kill pathogens, it reacts with organic matter in water to form harmful byproducts—some of which have been linked to cancer and reproductive health issues.

Why Chlorine Dioxide is the Safer Choice

  • Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is a more effective and safer water treatment solution because it:
  • Destroys pathogens without forming toxic byproducts
  • Leaves no harmful residues or chlorinated compounds
Is effective at lower doses compared to chlorine

At Selective Micro Technologies, our Selectrocide® chlorine dioxide solutions provide ultra-pure water treatment that eliminates bacteria, viruses, and biofilm without producing dangerous byproducts.
